Arson, assault on cop charges for dumpster fire

Steve Godbout was arrested for a Tuesday morning Oliver dumpster fire later that day

Oliver police say they have arrested a man on arson charges after the fire department got a call to a dumpster fire behind Oliver Place Mall.

Emergency crews got the call to the fire at about 6 a.m. Tuesday.

Upon arrival, a man, identified as Steve Godbout, 50, was reportedly seen “putting items into the dumpster fire.”

Godbout had reportedly just been released from jail on Jan. 28, and he had been on probation while living in Oliver.

Godbout was arrested behind the Oliver Place Mall later that day, with several unnamed charges approved by Crown counsel.

According to Court Services Online, Godbout is facing two charges for breaches of court orders, one count of arson, a count of resisting arrest and one count of assault on a police officer.

His next court appearance is set for Feb. 21.
