Agassiz, Harrison COVID-19 cases heading back towards weekly normal

The area saw 10 new cases between Jan. 10 and 16, after a one week high of 19

Agassiz and Harrison’s one-week COVID spike has dipped back down.

From Jan. 10 to 16, 10 people tested positive for COVID-19 in the Agassiz-Harrison local health area, which covers everywhere between Sts’ailes First Nation, Ruby Creek and past the northern tip of Harrison Lake. The previous week, 19 people tested positive, marking a major increase from the average eight.

Last week, the Agassiz-Harrison local health area saw among the highest daily positive rates in the province, with just under one in every 500 people receiving a positive result. Now, the area is back in the middle of the pack, with around one new case for every 1,000 people.

According to the 2016 Census — the most recent census data available — the local health authority has a population of 9,705 people. Nearly a quarter of those people are 65 and older.

Nearby, other communities have been seeing a decrease in their COVID-19 positive test results as well. Abbotsford is seeing a low of 207 new cases between Jan. 10 and 16, after hovering between 300 and 400 weekly cases during the last months of 2020. Chilliwack is also a slight trend downwards, with 119 new cases after two weeks in the 140-160 range.

Mission and Hope, however, are seeing upticks in their COVID-19 case numbers. In particular, Hope has seen 18 new cases of COVID-19, after months of having almost no positive results.

Individuals are asked to get tested as soon as they have COVID-19-like symptoms, even mild ones.

The nearest testing sites for Agassiz and Harrison residents are in Chilliwack (9090 Newman Road), Hope (1275 7th Avenue) and Mission (7324 Hurd Street).

All sites accept adults and children over three months. Walk-ins are available on a first-come first-serve basis, but appointments are preferred.
