Shirley Wilson (left) says there are no plans to livestream school board meetings in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford school board won’t join live streamers anytime soon

A handful of B.C. boards broadcast public meetings

You can stream almost anything on your electronic device these days – Stranger Things, hockey games, city council meetings – but not Abbotsford school board meetings.

A handful of B.C.’s 60 school districts have begun streaming live video of public meetings online, including Chilliwack, which broadcast its first meeting on Oct. 16.

Abbotsford’s board of education chair Shirley Wilson said she has heard the idea floated a couple times over her 12 years as a trustee but there has never been a strong push for it.

“I suppose that there are benefits to it; there’s a transparency that goes with that,” she said.

But there would also be a cost to stream meetings and Wilson said she’s not sure it would be worth it.

Wilson said she plans to talk to trustees from districts who livestream about their experiences and may consider bringing the idea to her board if she hears positive feedback.
