What an enthusiastic community response we had to our Neighbourhood Small Grants Project invitation.

This program, provided by the Beacon Fund and managed by the Vancouver Foundation, has been supporting resident-led initiatives that enhance local neighbourhoods since 1999.

The NSGP fosters strong, vibrant communities in the belief that neighbourhoods with actively-engaged residents are safer and more vigorous. We were able to support all the applications we received, either with grant funds or by providing infrastructure to support program delivery.

Watch for the New Life Art Show, featuring children’s art, an elder-care information session, the expansion of the Growing Green Gardening project, the Soul of the World Multicultural Choir, and the World of Youth project, a youth led group that helps students integrate into their new community.

• The adjustment to being a parent is a significant life change filled with many joys but also some challenges.

We are currently taking an interest list for several parent education programs. Daddy and Me and Mommy and Me are programs that provide practical information and community connections to make the journey into parenthood a special time.

• The toddler years can be a wonderful time of exciting growth and learning, but they can also be challenging. Positively Parenting your Toddler is an interactive program for parents and caregivers of children (eight months to three years) that addresses development, temperament, emotional literacy, and discussion on promoting positive behaviour.

Develop your strengths as a parent in More Tools for Your Parenting Toolkit, a program for parents and caregivers of children ages 5-12.

Topics include understanding the behaviour of children, building strong relationships, and providing effective encouragement and communication.

Call 604-538-5060 ext 22 for more information on these programs.

• It’s that time of year again, and every dollar helps.

The funding we receive from the United Way helps us to support and strengthen individuals, our neighbourhood and our community.

We give children the best possible start in life, help seniors to stay active and independent, and help vulnerable members of our community to improve the quality of their lives.

The United Way is truly about people and the power of community, investing in more than 150 community agencies and initiatives throughout the Lower Mainland, helping us to create change. Please support this year’s United Way campaign. For more information go to www.uwlm.ca.
