Capturing the classics

Gateby residents and Day Break clients take part in a photo shoot for a calendar to fundraise for raised gardens at The Gateby

Gateby residents and Day Break clients recalled some of their favourite film classics for their calendar project.

They came up with a long list which was cut down to 12 and planned the costumes for photo shoots with local artographer Dave Dandell, who filled in the background and props for the calendar pages.

“This was absolutely fun, getting all dressed up in the costumes. It was very nice. I never thought I would do anything like this but I like it,” said Gloria Szadiak, who was in the Christmas photo.

Dandell, a former Calgary Sun (then the Albertan) photographer and computer store owner in Vernon, is getting in the spirit of the calendar, using all local props and backgrounds to complete the photos.

“I couldn’t find a white horse for the Lone Ranger picture online so I decided to find a local one. I had to hike two miles to get the background for that photo. Some of the pictures are quite a challenge but everyone is doing a great job,” said Dandell, who has also shot a music video for Andi Starr in L.A.

Recreation therapist Marijon Schindel said proceeds from the calendar will help build raised garden beds next summer.

“This has been a really cooperative project for everyone and we’re all looking forward to seeing the finished calendar,” she said. “We thank everyone who helped us with everything.”

The raised bed garden will be accessible to about 60 Gateby residents and 100 Day Break clients. The cost is about $5,000 and it is hoped that it will be finished for next summer. Donations of cash, materials or labour would be much appreciated.

The calendars ($20 each) can be pre-ordered until Oct. 31 at The Gateby by calling Schindel or Roberta Dunlop at 250-545-4456. The calendar will also be available at The Gateby.
