ALEX HOUSE: No slowing down this fall

South Surrey's Alexandra Neighbourhood House as busy as ever as summer comes to end

The days are growing shorter and the ocean breezes are bringing us the last soft smells of summer.

Alex House is transitioning from a very busy summer season to an equally busy fall.

If you’ve never been to the camp, it’s a great time to visit our unique and historic site by the ocean and discover all that we have to offer.

• A large part of our summer has been spent preparing for our upcoming renovation project, the Longhouse 72-hour Extreme Makeover, scheduled for Oct. 18-20.

The aging Longhouse was chosen for this project due to its major interior and exterior structural and aesthetic issues.

The scope for this stage of the project is $300,000 and, with support from Investors Group, in-kind donations and volunteer time already contributed, we are halfway there.

We are still in need of skilled volunteers and tradespeople and, if you are unable to volunteer, perhaps consider a donation.

Be part of this exciting community endeavor. Find out more at www.alexhouse.net

• Welcome back to Alexandra Family Place drop-in next week.

Parents of children up to age six can connect with other families while children explore, create, imagine, move and play.

The drop-in runs Tuesday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in our Children’s House – $5/family.

Call 604-535-0015 ext 229 for more information.

• Connect is an attachment-based program for parents who are trying to respond to their teen’s challenging behaviour.

The next group starts Thursday, Sept. 25.

Call 604-538-5060 ext 23 for information and registration.

• Our ongoing parent education workshop series for parents of children ages 5-18 starts Monday, Sept. 30, 6:45 p.m. with “What’s love got to do with it?” followed by “Why are you acting this way?” “Listen to me!” and “We have a problem…”

Attend only one or as many as you like.

Cost is $10/workshop/family.

For information and registration, call 604-538-5060 ext 24.

• We’re excited to announce our latest project: two little free libraries.

Don’t know what to do with that novel you enjoyed but won’t read again? Bring it to the little library.

And while you’re there, see what others have donated.

There’s no due date – just bring it back when you’re done.

One little library is located by Alexandra Community Garden, the perfect place to stretch out on the grass with a good book.

The second is by the native plant garden – another beautiful spot to sit.

There is also a small reading area in our Media Room, which is open at posted times during the week.

Staffed by volunteers, it will be a place to sit and relax with a book on wet, cold days.

For more information call 604-535-0015 ext 236.

• We have many more programs and events for our community. Please visit our website at www.alexhouse.net
