Ballet Jorgen is offering young performers the chance to join a professional cast for Duncan show

There’s a great opportunity coming up for local dancers.

Canada’s Ballet Jörgen and the Cowichan Performing Arts Centre are looking for nine to 12 male and female dance students to perform with the company in their production of Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet.

The cast will be assembled from local area students based on a recommendation from a dance teacher. Successful dancers will need to attend a rehearsal on Thursday, Feb. 6 from 4 to 5:45 p.m. There will also be three to four hours of rehearsal on the day of the show. All dates and times are subject to change.

The candidates will need to learn the choreography quickly, listen well, and follow and retain directions easily. They must have good stage presence and carry themselves well. There are a few ‘formal’ dance steps.

The eligibility criteria is strict: you need to be aged nine to 17, with a dance background.

For the two to four Young Children and Nature Character roles, the dancers must be between 4 foot 2 and 4 foot 9 in height.

For the School-age Children and Nature Characters, there are three to five roles for kids whose height measures between 4 foot 10 and 5 foot 3.

There are also up to three roles as Teenagers/Young Adults and slightly bigger Nature Characters. For these ones, the dancers must be between 5 foot 4 and 5 foot 6 tall.

The deadline to apply for a role in the Feb. 7 performance of Anne of Green Gables – The Ballet in Duncan is Friday, Jan. 17 at 5 p.m.
