The McMillan Arts Centre in Parksville will host a pair of exhibits in October and stage new introductory classes until the end of November.
Quilt artist and surface designer Margie Davidson will hold an exhibit through Nov. 1. Davidson moved Edmonton to Qualicum Beach in 2017, and has connected with the arts community since her arrival. She is an artist in residence and faculty member at the MAC, a studio artist at The Old School House Arts Centre and a founding member of the Oceanside Fibre Connections.
Davidson’s love of colour can be seen through the variety of techniques she uses to add colour to cloth. She is influenced by the changing colours of different seasons, giving her artwork a connection to nature. Since moving to Vancouver Island, Davidson has immersed herself in nature and when enjoying walks through forest paths or along the seashore, she feels inspired. These new experiences are reflected in her new work.
On Oct. 3, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., the Oceanside Photography Club will hold an exhibit titled ‘Different Perspectives’.
This event welcomes everyone who appreciates local talent. Artists include Terry Anderson, David Blackmore, Nick Bosma, Wayne Buhr, Garry Campbell, Gail Courtice, Ed Eunnett, Rick Horte, Vina Johnson, Lorene Kimura, Lynn Page, Frieda Van der Rees and Mary Watts.
The MAC will also start a new introductory program titled ‘New Morning Art Bites’, to be held from 10 a.m. until noon on Sunday mornings. The classes are designed for curious people unsure about which medium they would like and encourages exploration through different mediums. Students are taught the basic techniques using a small array of art supplies. For this program, everything will be provided. Each class is $30, and is limited to a maximum class size of nine students.
On Oct. 4, Lori Schiersmann will host One Stroke. On Oct. 25, Janet Cameron will host a pastels class. On Nov. 15, Joanne Purdy will host Relief Sculpture. And on Nov. 29, Varla Flegel will host a watercolour class.
