Comox Valley artist Sharon Lennox was among the winners at the Sidney Fine Art Show — one of the largest of its kind on Vancouver Island.

Her Perched Barn Owl, a scratchboard, was chosen for a Juror Choice Award.

Scratchboard enables Lennox to achieve intricate details, anatomical accuracy and dramatic lighting in the birds and other wildlife she portrays.

“I want the viewer to appreciate the life, beauty and character of the subject I am portraying,” said Lennox, a Royston resident. “From inches away or across the room, I want my painting to have the feeling of being alive and begging to be touched.”

The Oct. 14-16 show was open to original art, stone carvings, photographs, acrylics, oils, watercolours, weaved baskets, scratchboard, fibre art and clay, among other mediums. Of nearly 1,000 submissions, about 400 pieces were selected by three jurors. Lennox entered three pieces into the show.

Each was adjudicated.

She received another honour Friday, Oct. 21 when she was accepted as a signature member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. Lennox was juried into the designation by three master members of the organization.
