Fall in love with jazz Thursday night

Ho! Ho! Ho!

Ho! Ho! Ho!

And just to add to that lovely Christmas feeling, it’s time to fall in love again. If you don’t quite manage to swoon for this week’s lovely performer, she assures us that you will fall in love with jazz.

Maureen Washington, an international, award-winning jazz and blues singer, is one of Vancouver Island’s most sought-after vocalists. Her rich tones and captivating emotions have cultivated large audiences with a styling that encompasses the soul of Etta James, Carmen McRae and the modernity of Holly Cole. And yet she remains a voice of her own.

This is Washington’s first appearance at Thursday Night Jazz at The Avalanche Bar, and we’re honoured and excited to welcome her to our stage.

Having had the honour of working with some of B.C.’s best musicians, Washington is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, and instructor. Recently, she released her ninth album, Harvest Moon, working alongside West Coast producer, Joby Baker, who is known for his Juno and Grammy award-winning tracks.

Selected regularly as a performer at the TD Victoria Jazz Festival, Washington has opened for The Blind Boys of Alabama, jazz legend, Joe Lovano and sang background vocals on Folk legend Valdy’s last album, Read Between The Lines.

Washington’s effortless charisma, crystal-clear control, and room-filling stage presence is enough to inspire any audience to fall in love with jazz again.

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. Admission is $10 for members, $12 for non-members.

There are still tickets remaining for our special Christmas show on Dec. 21, when Micah Barnes (former leader of The Nylons) performs his Christmas in New York concert next week. You can either buy them this Thursday evening at live jazz, or otherwise from Bop City in Courtenay. Prices are $20 for members, $25 for non-members.
