A spring choir season will soon be in session and you are invited to become a part of it beginning Wednesday, Jan. 17.

The Just in Time Choirs starts 2018 off strong with a selection of songs to stir up a little trouble with its tempting theme of rock the boat.

Registration is open to join Unplugged, a mixed non-auditioned choir of adult singers. This year, JiT is encouraging more men to join, and is aiming to increase its female soprano section.

If you are interested in stirring up a little change to your norm and eager to try something new, step out of the comfort zone and step into a community of enthusiastic people who love to express themselves through song. No previous singing experience is necessary.

Unplugged, one of three Just in Time choirs, is an ensemble of approximately 60 adult women and men singers who meet weekly on Wednesday evenings in Comox under the direction of Wendy Nixon Stothert to share and grow in one’s own singing experience with confidence and encouragement.

The choir sings a contemporary repertoire of songs based on a chosen theme for each season. Songs range from genres such as jazz, rock, pop, folk, funk, Latin, soul and gospel.

Rock the Boat themed songs represent lyrics that express shaking up the status quo, being a little radical or making a few waves. The unique collection for Unplugged includes rock and roll classics such as C’Mon Everybody (Elvis Presley), Times They are a Changin’ (Bob Dylan) and Wheat Kings (Tragically Hip). A full playlist can be found on the choir website at justintimechoirs.ca.

New choir singers are welcome to check out the choir without any obligation or commitment. The first rehearsal is free and if the experience was positive new members can then register and stay for the remainder of the 12-week term.

The first practice is Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. at Highland Secondary. At the end of the season, the choir will perform in front of a public audience late April at the Sid Williams Theatre.

The Just in Time Choirs first launched in 2005 by Nixon Stothert, choir director and pianist Sean Mooney. In addition to Unplugged, there are two audition-only choir ensembles: The Jems, a group of auditioned women; and Vocal Minority, a group of approximately 15 men and women. Auditions for both ensembles are held annually in June and are open to all members of the three choir ensembles.
