Dog Mountain Brewing gets development permit, liquor license endorsement

Port Alberni City Council has given the green light to a proposed microbrewery in the Uptown area.

Council voted during a meeting on Monday, Feb. 11 to endorse a liquor license application and approve a development permit for Dog Mountain Brewing, operating at the former “Valley Wines & Water” winemaking and supplies facility on Third Avenue.

The owners are proposing to renovate the building in order to brew craft beer for sale on-site and operate a tasting lounge. A rooftop patio has also been proposed, and the building will need to be renovated to support this patio.

Katelyn McDougall, Port Alberni’s manager of planning, said during Monday’s meeting that the plans meet all development permit guidelines for the area and supported issuing a development permit.

“Overall, the development would be a positive commercial development for the uptown area,” she said.

The owners have also applied for a liquor license with a lounge endorsement. The city provided notice to nearby residents, but no response was received. According to bylaw services manager Flynn Scott, RCMP said that noise from the rooftop patio might be a concern, but the hours of operation are reasonable.

The applicants have also proposed several mitigating solutions for noise, such as a patio seating arrangement to face Third Avenue and reduce noise on the residential side, and fencing around the building so patrons would have to exit the building on the street side.

Council voted unanimously on Monday to approve the development permit and also to provide the Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch (LCRB) with a positive recommendation. The final decision on a liquor license will be up to the LCRB.
