Former Loghouse Pub transformation nears completion

If it ain’t broke, replace it?

That’s the approach Loghouse Pub owner Ron Cheeke took after being named the best pub by the Westshore Chamber of Commerce in 2015. The Loghouse closed its doors for good about six months ago to begin an extensive, top to bottom renovation to open Langford’s first official craft beer brewhouse and restaurant establishment.

“We looked at the bigger picture after putting in the brewery,” Cheeke said, referring to The Axe and Barrel Brewing Company, which opened in October 2015. The name is a reference to the historical connection with the loggers who originally settled the region.

The 3,500 sq. ft. space it occupies was formerly The Loghouse Pub’s liquor store before it was converted to create craft beers at a cost of $1.2 million.

“There’s lots of people moving to the West Shore. We wanted to create something new and unique that appeals to young professionals who grew up with craft beer and are looking for a high quality brew pub experience paired with high quality, locally-sourced food,” Cheeke explained.

The menu for the Axe and Barrel Barbecue Brewhouse will feature all sorts of barbecued and house-smoked meats infused with fresh handmade beers from our brewery, Cheeke said. “Our sauces and condiments will all be made in house using our beers as well.”

Chris Silvestri, director of operations, said they were pleased to be able to add brewmaster David Woodward.”He was schooled in England and is well-known and respected in the industry for his work in Whistler and Vancouver Island.”

Silvestri also sang the praises of executive chef Chad Martin. “He has a wealth of fine-dining experience and is putting his spin on barbecuing in a way that hasn’t been done before on the West Shore.”

All of the meat will be sourced from B.C., and local produce will be utilized wherever possible, depending on seasonal availability, Silverstri added.

Cheeke said all new, state-of-the-art equipment has been brought in for the new kitchen at a cost of $50,000. He estimates the entire renovation will be in the range of $1.4 million.

“We can’t wait to take our guests on an extraordinary new journey,” said Cheeke, who expects the Axe and Barrel Barbecue Brewhouse to open in early April. “We’re taking craft beers and barbecue to a whole new level.”

He and Silvestri have decided to cater to an adult clientele for now, but the liquor-primary license gives them the flexibility and option to change in the future.
