Thief netted 'fishing' for booze

Abbotsford Police netted a thief fishing bottles out of a liquor store

early Tuesday morning.

A security guard doing rounds at the Meadowfair Mall in the 34900 block of South Fraser Way saw a stick poking out of the ceiling of the Liquor Barn.

The stick was a two by four rigged with a coat hanger bent into a loop that was being used to fish up bottles of booze.

Officers arrived to find the suspect climbing down a drain pipe at the back of the mall with four bottles of liquor and his fishing gear.

Apparently the suspect climbed the roof, got into the mall and removed the ceiling tiles in the liquor store.

Police aren't sure the suspect's efforts were worth the reward.

"It's definitely a lot of work for the time he's going to be spending in jail," said Abbotsford Police Sgt. Mike Powell.
