I would like the opportunity to give back to the community. As a successful businessman, I truly have the expertise required. I hope that during the 20+ years that I have lived here, I have earned your trust and on Nov. 7 I hope to earn your vote. Voting Middleton will ensure that you elect a councillor that won’t try and dazzle you with flash and pageantry. Voting for me will get you a dedicated, hard-working person who isn’t afraid to look you in the eye when tough decisions need to be made and explain why I did what I did. I am someone who has the ability to work on multiple issues while not getting hung up on issues from the past. None of us have all the answers. Part of being a good councillor is having the ability and desire to listen to the citizens and the experts, digest the information and make an educated, informed decision. I know that once you’ve sorted through the banter and rhetoric, you will come to the conclusion that I have the common sense and skills required for the job. Make your “MARK” count. Vote Mark Middleton for Courtenay council.

I am running because I am passionate that we grow with a balanced approach that will allow us to provide opportunity and jobs for our citizens while enhancing what we have. I am a married father of three, and I am also a local minister and Rotarian. I have been a board member of CV Christian School. I am active with the Emergency Cold Weather Shelter and community development in Africa. I am advocating three key issues: 1.Taxes and infrastructure: I will work very hard to ensure that taxes are kept under control. I see spending millions on water meters as misdirected when there are other key priorities 2. Jobs: We need to work with our business community to develop creative ideas to help the City build and enhance our environment to help business thrive and grow. 3. Affordable housing: I will advocate that we work with our creative non-profit sector, developers — and the senior levels of government — to tackle this important issue. Through my experiences serving locally and internationally, I have developed a common sense approach and ability to work with many different people, styles and viewpoints. I believe that my balanced collaborative approach will yield excellent results.

On Nov. 7, I offer some things none of the other candidates have to offer — experience and time. Twenty years ago, I served on a Courtenay City Council that made some incredible positive changes — transit, walkways, recreation facilities, environmental council, underground wiring, low-income housing, rental vacancy studies, social planning council and more. I decided not to run for re-election because of family commitment. However, I still was engaged in community service. I am a director of the Food Bank Society and the Economic Development Society and, until last month, the Community Foundation. I was the chair of the Sandwick Transition Advisory Committee and I am the treasurer of my choir, the Celebration Singers. Every Wednesday, I play piano at the soup kitchen, and most Fridays at the Casa Loma Seniors’ Village.

Courtenay, jewel of the Island with so much opportunity to be more. Vision with passion can transform our community, taking it beyond petty bureaucracy into a leadership role for others to follow. We don’t have to send our youth and loved ones away to find meaningful employment, nor ride the backs of our senior citizens with heavy property taxes. Together, with tax incentives, we can invite targeted industries; technology, enviromental, energy, value-added manufacturing and processing. Encourage tourism, and work with developers, investors and employers at all levels to bring jobs, tax income and infrastructure to our Valley. Together, we can build on our existing social programs to care for our most vulnerable. Move forward with our hospital, bridge, police station, single Valley government and plasma gasification. As councillor, I will listen carefully and work passionately for our city and community, seek opportunities for our future and conscientiously balance our need for commerce and sustainability, development and quality of life, prosperity and environment important for a healthy community. Get excited, get involved. Join with me and together, let’s get it done. Check out the rants on YouTube or information on Facebook — keywords: John Van Egmond for City Council.
Some readers have expressed consternation over tulips that do not reappear after a few short years. A few have wondered if the reason could be sneaky varmints digging up the bulbs and making off with them. Others have asked if it could be the result of some disease. More than likely it is simply the type of tulip itself.
