Renegades defend Jr. bantam B.C. title
Published: December 01, 2008 6:02 PMMake it back-to-back B.C. titles for the Victoria Renegades, the 2007 and 2008 Junior Bantam Provincial Champions.
The 'Gades cruised to a safe 67-20 victory over the Coquitlam Raiders under the dome Saturday afternoon in B.C. Place.
As champs the Renegades cap a perfect 13-0 season. Fired up and ready, the Renegades took control early in the game building a 32-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
“It was the tremendous play from all three facets of the game," said head coach Mark Townsend in a press release. "Offense, defense and special teams led to the early lead and carried the Renegades throughout the contest."
Running back Mason Swift led the Renegades scoring with three rushing touchdowns and one TD reception. MJ Gabas returned from injury after missing the semifinal and was the leading rusher in the game, notching a pair of rushing touchdowns.
The defense also got in on the scoring act when Andrew Weinstein recovered a Coquitlam fumble and flipped the ball to Alex Brennan who sprinted to the end zone for the touchdown. QB Johnston played his best game of the year, said Townsend. Johnston went seven for 10 in passing, good for 227 yards and two touchdowns with pass completions to five different receivers.
Defensively the Renegades forced four Coquitlam turnovers. Gabas had two interceptions, Alec Wong an interception with the Raiders threatening, and Andrew Weinstein a critical fumble recovery which resulted a defensive score for the Renegades.
Weinstein, Swift, Jeff Frank, Ben Sloat and Cassidy Jones led the team in tackles. Swift was named Most Outstanding Player and Jacob Jones earned Most Sportsmanlike Player. Frank received the Renegades Defensive Game Ball, Johnston the Renegades Offensive Game Ball.
