Maekawas taking golden routine to Toronto

The Victoria Racquet Club figure skating program is thrilled with their results from the 2009 BMO Skate Canada sectional championships in Nanaimo, Nov. 12-16.

Four Racquet Club skaters performed well enough to qualify for the next BMO Skate Canada event, the Western Challenge held Dec. 3-7 in Mississauga, Ont.

The sectionals are the biggest competition in B.C. for figure skating, also drawing from the Yukon Territory.

Racquet Club ice-dance combo Pilar and Leonardo Maekawa skated to a personal best at the sectionals with a score over 60 points en route to a first place finish in the pre-novice dance category.

As a result of their gold medal, the brother and sister team will attend the Western Challenge. Leonardo also qualified for the Western with a fourth place finish in the pre-novice men’s category.

Casey Beavil and Josiah Early won silver in the pre-novice pairs and are heading not only to the Western Challenge but have also booked a spot at the junior nationals in Calgary, Feb. 11-14.

Other results include Matthew Den Boer earning a bronze in pre-juvenile men, Josiah Early sixth in novice men, Dominique Banner 21st in pre-novice ladies and Pilar Maekawa 22nd in pre-novice ladies.
