Claremont ‘Best’ed in Shootout’s senior bracket
Published: December 01, 2008 6:05 PMEdging Claremont in the semifinal was the key for Charles Best as the Coquitlam based high school field lacrosse team are the 2008 Spartan Shootout senior champions.
In semifinals Charles Best defeated Claremont 9-7 and New Westminster defeated Washington State’s Mercer Island 10-9.
The scores were indicative of a competitive field as New West would fall 11-10 to Charles Best in the final, one of many one-goal games.
The turf fields at the University of Victoria and Topaz park were overrun this weekend with tournament fixtures from the Shootout. Six teams visited at the senior level though just three of those schools, St. Francis Xavier, Mercer Island and Charles Best brought junior teams as well. Claremont split their junior program into teams A and B, both of which fell to St. Francis Xavier on day one, Thursday.
St. FX doubled Claremont-A 14-7 and defeated Claremont-B 9-6.
By Saturday, however, the Jr. Claremont sides ironed out their game plans. Team B redeemed their early loss to St. FX, knocking the Edmonton school from the semifinals with a 7-6 victory. Group A defeated Mercer Island 11-6.
In the junior bracket final, it was Claremont-A defeating their counterparts 10-4. Cam Anderson (A) and Scott Slym (B) earned the MVP honours for their respective teams in the final.
