Saanich, Oak Bay figure skaters superb at Islands
Zoe Delano and Chanel Carle–Bowles skated to their respective division titles at the recent Vancouver Island Regional Championships. Both girls train at the Saanich Skating Club and will continue to train for the B.C. Section Competition which takes place in Richmond, Nov. 11–15, 2009.
Ravie Ponn also medaled for Saanich in the pre-juvenile division, placing third.
Oak Bay Figure Skating Club competed and won the team trophy for best overall finishes.
UVic rowers win nats in Montreal
UVic Vikes pair rowers Josh Morris and Mike Mason won silver at the Canadian University Rowing Association championships in Montreal on the weekend, helping UVic to the CIS championship.
The Vikes biggest win came in the eight, edging out the UBC Thunderbirds with a time of 6:03.8, to pick up valuable points in the team standings. The men’s eight are Mason, Morris, Mark Vodden, Erik Johnson, Richard Herlinveaux, Eric Bevan, Peter Brooks, Brent Dallimore and coxswain Jane Gumley.
The Vikes also won bronze medals in the four, lightweight double and lightweight four. It’s the fifth time in school history after a successful performance at Montreal’s Olympic Basin on Sunday. Topping it off was Vikes coach Howie Campbell winning Coach of the Year.
Peewee Hitmen perfect on gridiron
In the fall’s nine-man Peewee football division, the Victoria Hitmen are 8-0.
The Hitmen have outscored their opponents 339-18, the Victoria Spartans, Cowichan Bulldogs and Nanaimo Bombers.
At Copley Park on Saturday the Hitmen defeated the Nanaimo Bombers 31-12 to become the Vancouver Island Champions.
Next is a trip to the mainland for provincials.
