Provincial host Eagles a favourite to be in finals
The Vic-Esquimalt Eagles are on track to make the Junior B box lacrosse provincials at home in the Archie Browning Sports Centre come the end of July.
Win or lose in the Pacific Northwest Junior Lacrosse League playoffs the provincial host Eagles have the automatic bye to the July 31 -
Aug. 1 tournament at the Archie.
But the first-place finishers in the PNJLL have designs on earning their way there outright, despite not having a permanent home.
The ice in Archie Browning will be removed for the second time this spring/summer to accomodate the Jr. B provincials, July 31-Aug. 3.
On Sunday the Eagles defeated the Nanaimo Jr. B Timbermen 9-8 in Nanaimo, clinching the best of three, round one playoff series two games to none. The Eagles won game one 8-6 at Panorama on Friday.
Moving onto round two, Vic-Esquimalt will play their second straight playoff series out of Panorama Recreation Centre in North Saanich due to a shortage of floor space.
The Eagles play the winner of the round one PNJLL playoff series between the Cowichan Valley Thunder and Westshore Bears, Friday July 17, 7:30 p.m. at Panorama.
Lochside to host Squirt provincials
Fourteen of the top B.C. Squirt A softball teams are on their way here for the 2009 provincials, July 17-19.
The championship will run the entire weekend at Lochside Park in Cordova Bay.
Kilshaw, Blake and Guest in top five
Victoria’s Stephen Kilshaw edged his mentor and defending champion Jasper Blake on the weekend as the two finished second and third at the Subaru West Coast half-Ironman triathlon in Vancouver. Kelly Guest came fifth in the men’s and Cheryl Murphy was the top Victoria woman in fifth.
Zone five tourney at Highlands
The Zone 5, South Island women’s net golf tournament kicks off Thursday, July 16 at Highlands Pacific Golf Course. The field is made up of 60 women with handicaps of 18.1 and higher.
