One spare enough for GNS volleyballers

With just seven players to their team, Glenlyon Norfolk School peaked at the right time to win the 2008 Island senior women’s ‘A’ volleyball championships on the weekend.

GNS defeated Duncan Christian in a tiebreaker to win the Island title, earning a spot at the ‘A’ provincials later this month in Castlegar.

After going 4-0 in round robin play Friday and Saturday, the GNS crew who feature just one spare cruised past the host Campbell River Christian School in a semifinal match.

In fact, it wasn’t until the final that GNS lost a match in the tourney, falling 25-23 to Duncan in the first game. The crew bounced back with a second game win of 25-19, setting up a tiebreaker that seesawed until GNS took control for a 15-12 win.

Led by head coach Shrawan Khanna and assistant coach Kristina Long, GNS have had a solid season despite playing with just one spare, proving it’s about what you do have and not what you don’t have.

In tournament play through the season GNS had played A to AAAA schools and were riding the confidence beating AAA Lambrick Park last weekend going into the Islands.

Peaking at the right time, the GNS crew consists of players Kimberly and Elizabeth Davis, Ellie Sercombe, Fiona Matheson, Kiersten Shulhan, Rachel Courtice and Moorea Zava.

Provincials are Nov. 27-29 at Selkirk College.
