This year’s inductees into the Greater Victoria Sports Hall of Fame span not only a wide range of sports, but harken back to Canada’s pre-First World War days.
There is an 86-year gap, for example, between Lori Bowden’s win at the 1999 World Ironman Championship in Hawaii and the 1913 Davis Cup tennis team of Robert Powell, J.F. Foulkes, Bernie Schwenger and Col. Henry Mayes.
Both Bowden and the Davis Cup team will be inducted at the 15th annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner Oct. 17 at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
Bowden is one of five women to have broken the nine-hour mark in Ironman triathlon, winning 12 women’s Ironman contests in her career.
The Davis Cup team earned its way to Wimbledon for the final by defeating Belgium and South Africa.
Unfortuneatly team U.S.A. bettered the Victoria-based Davis team three matches to one in the zone finals.
Three athletes in total will be inducted into the hall. Along with Bowden, legendary Langford and Western speedway racer Dave Cooper and national soccer team member Brian Robinson will also be welcomed.
Joining the builder category are three more contributors – tennis co-ordinator and coach Gordon Hartley, basketball and tennis coach Howard Tooby and rugby great Don Burgess for his coaching efforts.
In the team category, the 1967-70 Rawlings-Maplettes senior ‘A’ women’s basketball team is being recognized alongside the Davis Cup tennis team.
As the Victoria Rawlings, the hoops team secured the 1967-68 Canadian championship, won the following year as the Maplettes with only four returning players, then captured their third title two years later.
Tickets for the event are available through Pat Hall at 250-389-0223.
