First-term Esquimalt councillor Barbara Desjardins has succeeded in bumping incumbent Chris Clement out of office in the township, winning the mayor's chair by a comfortable margin.
Desjardins, the only councillor to vote against the closure of the Archie Browning Sports centre when council first voted to close the municipal ice rink – a decision that was later rescinded – rode that wave into office Saturday.
Her total of 2,131 votes easily outdistanced two-time mayor Clement, who pulled in 1,278 votes.
In the council race, several new faces will be sitting around the table when the new group meets for the first time later this month.
Incumbent Don Linge topped the polls with 1,939 votes, followed closely by political newcomer Alison Gaul at 1,913. Gaul, a member of the Friends of Archie Browning Sports Centre, campaigned largely on keeping the arena open.
The next three winners were within 30 votes of each other, with incumbent Lynda Hundleby (1,477) placing third, former councillor Brice McIldoon (1,451) fourth and another political rookie, Meagan Brame, fifth at 1,447.
Randall Garrison, a former NDP federal candidate in the area, grabbed the last spot with 1,381 votes.
