Lion Dance celebrates the anniversary of Chinese Freemasons
The lion stopped to shop at the Government Street market as the lions were set loose in Chinatown Sunday to celebrate the anniversary of the Chinese Freemasons. Lion dancers visit businesses who tie a red envelope filled with money to a head of lettuce and hang it above the front door. The lion approaches the lettuce like a curious cat, consumes the lettuce and spitting out the leaves but not the money. The lion dance is supposed to bring good luck and fortune to the business.
