CRD warns of unfiltered sewage
Updated: August 04, 2009 4:10 PM
For one night, the sewage will flow freely into the ocean at Macaulay Point pump station.
In order to repair some mechanical equipment, crews are removing the filtering screens overnight Tuesday.
While sewage isn't treated before it enters the oceans, the screen captures any solids bigger than six millimetres in diameter.
The Capital Regional District, which oversees the outfall, predicts that health effects from the screen's temporary removal will be minimal. The district will monitor the water and place cautionary signage at local beaches until there is no longer any risk to human health.
