A Victoria woman has been charged with animal cruelty after she abandoned two pet chinchillas and one cat in her apartment for at least 17 days.

One chinchilla died of starvation hours after the animals were discovered in the woman's apartment.

"One of the most heartbreaking aspects of this story is that there was an open bag of chinchilla food less than two metres from the cage where these animals were kept," B.C. SPCA special provincial Const. Lynsay Bailey, who investigated the case, said in a press release.

The three animals were discovered by the woman's landlord who entered the apartment to remove items she left behind.

The chinchilla that survived, named Lilo, and the short-haired cat named Princess have both been adopted to families.

Robyn Louise MacMillan was charged under the Criminal Code and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
