A Christian outreach program has lost its home base on Mason Street.

The Church Army has rented the cottage at 930 Mason St. for the past 10 years from St. John the Divine Church.

Recently, however, the Church Army ministry changed its focus from street youth to adults with addictions.

With the change came a dramatic increase in drug deals in the neighbourhood and on church property, said Rev. Harold Munn of St. John the Divine.

"“Our congregation is known for its commitment to social justice, and we will continue to advocate for real solutions for people living in sickness, chaos and vulnerability due to their addictions. However, these intense issues are beyond the ability of a volunteer congregation to respond to without substantial government support," Munn said.

Next weekend, the Victoria Cool Aid Society will begin operating its cold weather shelter in the church.

The Church Army's lease ends Dec. 31.
