An asteroid floating in outer space is being named Vicsympho, after the Victoria Symphony.
Jim Hesser, director of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, drafted a proposal to name the asteroid after the symphony, after the rock was discovered by Toronto astronomy professor David Balam.
Hesser so named the asteroid "for the orchestra's early and inspirational commitment to marrying the arts and sciences," according to a press release.
Vicsympho was discovered in June 2007. Its diameter is three kilometres and it revolves around the sun every 5.5 years, travelling between Mars and Jupiter.
