A Victoria police officer is waiting for blood test results after a man infected with hepatitis C spit at the officer.

Police were called to the 700 block of Pandora Avenue on Oct. 18, responding to reports of a man saying he had 60 pounds of explosives, and 60 one-centimetre ball bearings strapped to his body.

The 48-year-old man was arrested

Police say the suspect suffers from a mental illness. He has a history of violence and was formerly in the military.

The man was taken to hospital. On the way he repeatedly hit his head inside the police vehicle and threatened the officers and their families. At the hospital, the man spit in one officer’s face. The officer was examined at the hospital and is waiting for lab results.

Victoria police are recommending charges of assaulting a police officer.

Hepatitis C causes chronic liver disease.
