Victoria MP wants expansion of transit tax credit program

Victoria MP Denise Savoie will introduce a private member's bill this week calling for an expansion of the federal government's transit tax credit.
Instead of just being applied to transit passes, she'd like to see people rewarded for cycling or carpooling to work.
“It’s time to get creative in encouraging alternative commuting choices to the single-occupancy car,” said Savoie.
Savoie’s bill would allow employees to receive or be reimbursed up to $100 monthly for commuter transit, $200 monthly for parking as a participant or driver in a carpool or $240 annually for bicycle maintenance.
These employer-provided transportation benefits would be exempt from the Income Tax Act.
A private member's bill is a legislative bill that is introduced by an individual MP and is not part of the government's planned legislation. Such bills rarely become law.
