Beating suspect surrenders to cops

A man has been arrested and charged in connection with an assault that left a 19-year-old man lying in the street in James Bay with severe head injuries.

Robert Kalen Gray, a 25-year-old man from Saanich, turned himself in to Victoria police on Monday – two weeks after the assault. He appeared in court Tuesday, charged with attempted murder and assault with a weapon.

Police said Gray attacked the victim once at the corner of Niagara and Menzies streets, then hit him with his vehicle at Toronto and Menzies streets.

Drug-smuggling attempt fails

Victoria police were waiting with handcuffs at the ready when a man suspected of smuggling drugs from the Lower Mainland landed at the HeliJet terminal last Friday.

The man stashed 7.5 kilograms of marijuana in a duffle bag. As HeliJet employees loaded the bag onto the aircraft, they smelled the pot inside and called police.
