City pushes ahead with bridge funding

It’s a big ticket item that could require a big-ticket loan.
Last week, Victoria city council passed the first three readings of a bylaw enabling it to borrow up to $63 million to replace the aging Johnson Street Bridge.
The city is counting on the provincial and federal governments to chip in two-thirds of project, but is still waiting to find out if the grant is coming.
Now, the Inspector of Municipalities will review the city’s loan authorization bylaw. If the provincial body approves the amount, voters will still have 30 days to veto the decision through a process called a counter-petition. The matter will then return to council for a final vote.
