A fire that started in an Esquimalt apartment stairwell late Wednesday night now at the centre of a police investigation.
Esquimalt fire crews responded to 980 Wordsley St. just before 11 p.m.
Most residents had already fled the building after hearing the alarm.
Due to the size of the building, Victoria fire rescue was called to assist, and crews put out the fourth-floor fire before it could do much damage.
Victoria police and Esquimalt fire investigators are investigating the cause of the blaze.
