James Bay Park candidate for makeover

The grassy park by Fisherman's Wharf is going natural, should Victoria council vote in favour of its reinvention.
Currently, the space is underused and unsuitable for a sports field, city staff report. Instead, the parks department envisions natural trees and shrubs, a harbour pathway, a playground and public plaza. The long-term plan includes daylighting portions of the creek, currently running through pipes underground.
While a survey revealed widespread community support for the plan, Bays United Soccer club and the James Bay Athletic Association will likely miss the old field. To make up for the loss of play space, council is seeking a grant for new synthetic turf at Vic High.
city hall's environment committee approved the plan on Thursday.
