After arriving in Victoria on the Coho ferry Monday, an American couple has been sent home with a criminal conviction.

Border Service officers searched the couple's vehicle at 9:50 a.m. Monday and found a Glock 9-millimetre handgun with laser sights and a box of ammunition. Later, officers discovered a loaded ammunition magazine stuffed in the man's sock.

Police arrested both suspects but sent the women back to the United States. The police kept the man in custody for further investigation.

The 57-year-old man appeared in court Tuesday, where he pled guilty of unauthorized possession of a handgun.

He got a $500 fine, a firearms prohibition and a return passage to the U.S.
