Aside from a few red-painted bodies on display, the downtown July 1 celebrations were largely family friendly this year.

Victoria police reported fewer incidents compared to previous years.

Two-hundred officers patrolled the crowd of 35,000 during the musical performances and fireworks. They confiscated alcohol from anyone caught carrying it and arrested 63 people for public drunkenness.

B.C. Transit also reported having an easier ride this year than in those of recent past.

Spokesperson Joanna Morton said the tone was more calm and content this year. Most people complied with the new policy banning passengers from carrying alcohol on the bus, she said.

Damage to buses included four smashed windows and one kicked in ceiling. Eleven people threw up on the bus and one was arrested for urinating.
