With the cold winter months comes the risk of stomach flus, warns the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. This year the centre has recorded 175 cases of gastroenteritis caused by Norovirus. The cases are most common in health-care facilities, but they also occur in daycare centres, schools, cruise ships, social gatherings and restaurants.
“The best thing anyone can do to reduce the risk of illness is to wash their hands vigorously with soap and water for 20 seconds,” said Bruce Gamage, the Provincial Infection Control Network manager.
Shoreline students have a big heart
Members of Shoreline community middle school’s Leadership Club won one of three 2008 Youth in Philanthropy awards for Greater Victoria.
Students focused on bridging the gap between seniors and youth in the community. Fifteen students volunteered in a seniors’ home and visited the Seniors Activity Centre at Juan de Fuca weekly for nine weeks. They later hosted a tea party at the school to honour their new friendships and their senior mentors.
Other local winners included Glenlyon Norfolk Junior School in the elementary division, and Reynolds secondary among high schools.
