Woman dies after 15-storey fall
An accidental plunge from a 15th-floor balcony killed a woman in James Bay on Monday afternoon.
The fall happened at Orchard House, a 24-storey apartment building on Michigan Street. The woman hadn’t been identified by Tuesday, but is believed to be in her early 30s. She was attempting to climb from the 15th storey balcony to her own below when she fell around 2:30 p.m.
Police and ambulance workers were unable to resuscitate her using CPR and a defibrillator.
Fraud suspect arrested in Victoria
Police arrested a man wanted in a string of Ontario frauds as he tried to board the Victoria Clipper ferry.
York Regional Police tipped off local authorities that a man wanted for scams worth a combined $1 million could be in the region. He was found Saturday by U.S. customs screening before he could board the ferry.
Isiah Kwado Boateng, 32, was set to accompany York police detectives back to Ontario on an endorsed warrant Monday, at their department’s expense.
Victoria’s Savoie gets critic roles
Victoria MP Denise Savoie has been tapped to serve as the NDP’s critic for housing and public transit.
In a release, Savoie said she was pleased party leader Jack Layton named her to portfolios that are especially important in her riding. She will also serve as deputy foreign affairs critic for Latin America.
Savoie previously served as critic for post-secondary education, skills training and literacy.
