UPDATE: Negotiations still ongoing with prospective police chief

The Victoria police board has made its recommendation for the new Victoria police chief.

But as of midday Monday, details of the contract with the selected individual were still hammered out.

"We don't have a contract signed yet," said board chair and Victoria Mayor Alan Lowe, noting that until the contract is ratified by the board, the identity of the successful candidate could not be revealed.

"At times negotiations break down and you may have to go through the next individual. And obviously it could cause great embarrassment for everybody if that is the case," he said.

The board is scheduled to meet Tuesday (Nov. 18), but no indication of any announcement of the hiring is on the meeting agenda. Lowe said a deal may be struck by Tuesday morning, in time for the board to announce the hiring, but he gave no guarantee negotiations would advance that quickly.

Pressed last week about persistent rumours that former Vancouver police chief Jamie Graham was chosen out of three candidates, Lowe refused to comment.

He was clearly annoyed at the board's vice-chair, Esquimalt Mayor Chris Clement, for disclosing that Graham was on the shortlist during a radio interview. Otherwise, Lowe said the information should have remained confidential.
