Two workshops next week will give Victoria residents practical suggestions for coping with Alzheimer’s disease.

On Nov. 5 the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. is hosting Communication - Creative Approaches to Supporting a Person with Dementia.

“People with dementia typically experience changes in behavior,” said Christin Hillary, the society’s Greater Victoria support and education coordinator.

The free morning session – it runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m – will offer effective ways to support the person and to reduce friction and stress.

The workshop runs at James Bay Community Project, 547 Michigan St. Limited free parking is available.

The next day, on Nov. 6, the society hosts a Preparation for Transfer to Residential Care workshop, designed specifically for family members of someone with dementia.

“Informed and well-prepared consumers can assess and ultimately improve the quality of care being offered to people with dementia,” Hillary said.

The session runs from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Yakimovich Wellness Centre, 1454 Hillside Ave. Two-hour free parking is available on side streets.

For information and to register call 250-382-2052 or chillary@alzheimerbc.org, or visit the society’s website at www.alzheimerbc.org.
