Alpha and Pitre join school board; Walsh the lone incumbent candidate not re-elected

A number of familiar faces are back on the Greater Victoria school board. Returning trustees include Tom Ferris, Bev Horsman, John Young, Michael McEvoy, Elaine Leonard, and Peg Orcherton -- who received the most votes overall. Two new faces, David Pitre and Catherine Alpha, were elected to the board. Mark Walsh, at 29 the youngest candidate, was the lone incumbent who was not re-elected.

On another note, only one of the three candidates supported by the Victoria Public Education Coalition was elected. Alpha will carry the voice of the coalition, back by the teachers' union and other groups, on the new school board.

Here are the results of the trustee election:

• Peg Orcherton, with 16,628,

• Bev Horsman, with 15,360,

• Elaine Leonard, with 14,493,

• John Young, with 13,048,

• Jim Holland , with 12,303,

• Michael McEvoy, with 12,147,

• Tom Ferris, with 11,891 votes,

• David Pitre, with 11,145,

• Catherine Alpha, with 10,828.

The candidates who were not elected:

• Tamara Malczewska, with 9,142,

• Michael Hayes, with 9,996,

• Mark Shuler, with 4,507,

• Mark Walsh, with 10,339,

• Starla Anderson, with 9,213.

• Lance Groseth, with 3,817 votes.
