First you start tripping, then it becomes difficult to hold things in your hand. Next it becomes hard to swallow and even speak. And then you only have a few more years to live.

ALS, or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (also known as Lou Gherig’s Disease), is slowly killing the muscular function of 300 people in B.C., and 3,000 in Canada.

Two or three people die of the crippling disease every day in this country, says ALS B.C.

There’s no cure for ALS and, 90 per cent of the time, it affects people with no family history of the disease.

Last weekend, ALS B.C. kicked off its Vancouver Island awareness and fundraising tour -- On a Roll for ALS -- with ALS sufferers James Grant from Shawnigan Lake, Terry Tocher from Chilliwack and Charles Patterson of Langford.

The organization provides support for sufferers and their friends and family, raises money to conduct research and treatment, and hosts public awareness events about the disease. For more information on ALS, or to donate, go to www.alsbc.ca.
