Brazilian beats and Latino flare

Festival Mexicano showcases more than just salsa and sombreros.

The third annual event, organized by the Victoria Multicultural Society is really an opportunity to celebrate Latino culture, says Colin McKean, event organizer.

And this year's festival will feature all local talent and performances with Brazilian beats and Latin flare.

The festival will kick off with a hip-shaking salsa dancing night at the Victoria Event Centre on Friday (July 10) at 8:30 p.m., but things really start heating up on Saturday and Sunday in Centennial Square.

The free noon-5 p.m. festival will feature Latin music and dance performances, pinata making and breaking, dance lessons, guacamole making and arts and crafts.

There will also be food prepared by Gela Espinosa. She previously owned a restaurant in Puerto Vallarta, and her mother was a street vendor in Guadalajara, Mexico.

"It doesn't get more authentic than that," McKean says.

The family-oriented event provides a forum to showcase local performers, artisans and musicians to the community.

Dance performances will include the Salsa Caliente Dancers, Salsa Moderna, Javier Monsalve and the Mexican Folklore Dancers. Music will be provided by Son de Cuba, Latin Project, Jambanga and Axe Capoeira.
