Food, dance and more at Hindu festival
If the aromas from the food don’t draw you in, the music and dance surely will.
Victoria’s Hindu Temple is hosting an open house where cooking enthusiasts can get a demonstration and women can learn how to wear a sari.
Henna, classical folk dance and a craft sale will also be available at the free event, open to everyone.
It’s also a good time to brush up your knowledge on the culture.
“You can learn a little about Hinduism, ask questions, get clarifications, and dispel myths about the Hindu traditions, culture and religion,” says organizer Suresh Basrur.
The Hindu community in Greater Victoria consists of about 250 to 300 families, says Basrur. They come from every corner of India, speak many languages and worship many different gods and goddesses.
Indian immigrants have been trickling into Victoria for over a century but the community has grown considerably over the last five years, Basrur says.
The open house runs July 3 (4-7 p.m.), July 4 (11 a.m.- 6 p.m.) and July 5 (11 a.m.-4 p.m.). Find the temple at 1934 Cultra Ave., Saanichton.
