Real estate sales in Greater Victoria reached their highest point in 17 years last month, according to the Victoria Real Estate Board.

The numbers suggest the local housing market "has clearly recovered," said Chris Markham,, president of the Victoria Real Estate Board.

In September, 776 properties sold on the VREB's Multiple Listings Service, or MLS, up 50 per cent from the 512 sales in September 2008.

Markham added prices are beginning to make a slight upswing as inventory declines.
