Youth employment centre job vacancies plummet
Updated: August 12, 2009 3:15 PM
Young people came flooding into Service Canada Centre for Youth this summer but only about half walked away with jobs.
Employers listed 572 job postings through the federal job-search centre this summer, compared with 1,439 positions last year.
Of those jobs up for grabs, 46 per cent were filled – a match-up rate slightly higher than last year, said Dawn Misener, youth services officer.
Despite the low employment statistics, the centre saw 488 students come through the doors looking for help with their resume, cover letter, interview techniques and other information. That’s triple the number seen by the centre the year before.
Misener wouldn’t say which employers are the biggest youth employers in the region.
