Victoria inventor receives Ontario's Premier's Award

The sun-beaten six-metre long Sloop Jim D doesn't look like much at first glance, but the work aboard her hull has won her owner the Premier's Award in Ontario.

Jim Harrington, president of AGO Environmental Electronics Ltd. in Esquimalt, was granted the award for creating a hydrogen fuel cell-powered engine for outboards. The car battery-sized unit combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce 1,000 watts of energy, the equivalent to more than one horsepower.

"I really am surprised and honoured," Harrington said of the award. "It is something that you never expect, but I appreciate this recognition very much."

Harrington graduated from Loyalist College with a degree in electronics engineering technology in 1969. Since 1970, he has developed research and exploration equipment for astrophysics, geophysics and oceanographic applications. Harrington also designed and constructed a high flux telescope for the Ulysses spacecraft that journeyed to Jupiter and around the sun.

"Jim Harrington's career achievements are outstanding," said Loyalist president Maureen Piercy.
