The men and women behind the outfit know about the rewards that can come through hard work and cooperation, and a group of coaches involved with Passion Sports is making a stop in Sooke from July 6-10 at SEAPARC to share their love and knowlege of the game of basketball.
Boys and girls in two age groups: 8-11 and 12-15 have a chance to get some solid teaching and motivation from the Passion Sports crew... there's room for about 40 in each group.
Passion Sports is made up of collegiate athletic achievers who are in the process of taking their program to all kinds of destinations across Western Canada... to some of the locations some would consider out-of-the-way. For example, one group will be in Tofino while another is here in Sooke in early July.
Some of the instructors include UVIC Vikes Cyril Indome (whom will be in Sooke), Kayla Gromme and Mike Hall; Greg Wallis and Greg Gillies of Simon Fraser University; plus Kate Carlson and Jordon Brown of the Camosun Chargers.
Here's a description of the group, in its own words:
"British Columbia's Passion Sports Basketball Academy is highly regarded as one of the province's premiere basketball development programs. It is the academy's mission to improve and inspire all participants to a higher level of basketball success regardless of current skill level. Our coaching staff has competed at the highest level of basketball in Canada. We are inspired and eager to mentor our next generation of athletes from a fresh player perspective. The Passion Sports program addresses everything an individual needs to be successful on and off the court. Be prepared to work harder!"
Cyril Indome is in his fifth year with the UVIC squad and is the captain of the team.
This is his second year with Passion Sports and he's looking forward to visiting Sooke.
The PS program is seems ideally suited to the athlete interested in helping out the up and comers.
"That's exactly it," said Indome this past weekend. "I love the skill development part of basketball." How big a part coaching may play in his future will remain to be seen, but for now the Vike is enjoying the mentor's role.
In terms of highlights from his sporting experience to date, Indome said that among a lot of memorable moments, competing in the nationals in his first year was right up there.
This is the perfect time for young basketball players to beef up their understanding of the game, and the difference that can come through commitment.
Passion Sports will raise the local level of skill July 6-10.
Camp will be in session each day from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
