Darkness shrouds Celtic win

The lights went out on Gordon Head Blue on Friday night at The Log – in more ways than one. Firstly, the visiting Vancouver Island Soccer League div-1 squad was down 3-2 to Sooke Celtic with about 15 minutes to go in the second half on a wet and windy night.
Secondly, a popping transformer and doused floodlights plunged the athletic event into an inky blackness, interrupted only by the peeping blueness of a bunch of cellphones.
The sports field was not the only place without lights as a downed line on Sooke Road cut the juice to a lot of homes in the area.
This would have been a pickpocket’s dream as the sizable crowed tentatively found it’s way to cars and trucks.
The boisterous and well-refreshed devotees on the south sideline took the sudden darkness as a cue to step up it’s raucous chorus of screaming... it was a pretty good time.
A win is a win and this one had an added level of sweetness for Celtic as it came from behind to earn it.
Gordon Head had gone up by a deuce in the first half on goals by Nils Webber and Craig Gorman. Notable for the hosts was the early red card ejection of Mike Moon following a tackle deemed by the officials as excessive.
With one offensive threat on ice, another went to work just before the half-time pause - Steve Scott blasting a penalty kick and bulging Gordon Head twine.
Newcomer Greg Fiddick continued his impressive play with a well-placed shot from about 30 yards out on the left attacking side.
With the score tied Celtic seized the initiative and began to assert its dominance.
It was Scott again who would put the game away with only moments of light left atop the poles at Fred Milne Park. The striker launched a curling, rising missile with a free kick tally. It was hard to tell if it went over, through or around the Gordon Head wall, but the result was clear… home 3 - guests 2.
“If they’ve played at least 60 minutes then the score stands,” explained Gordon Head Blue manager Brian Gorman of the league policy of games cut short for one reason or another.
“We were disappointed the lights went out. We would have liked to have had the chance to come back in that game.”
It was a “really nice goal” by Fiddick that drew the teams even, according to Scott, who was reached the following day. Celtic fans will be happy about Fiddick, a friend of Robbie Heggelund and Sidney resident, opting to compete in Celtic togs.
“I think our team got off to a good start,” said Gorman. “We were up 2-0 and looking good, but it was a bad time to lose a penalty... just before halftime. The other team started to take control in the second half.
“This is our first season in division one,” Gorman continued. “They’re fitting into it well. They’re a young team, generally all 21 and younger. I think we can give Sooke a good game the next time we play them.”
Next up for the freewheelin’, front-runnin’ Celtic is a Friday, October 9 home date with Gordon Head Gold. Game time, as usual, 7 p.m.
