Mouthing off inappropriate

It has been almost a year since our newest councillors were sworn into office. One would think that by now they would have learned the points of order during council meetings along with a little diplomacy and tact.

Councillor Herb Haldane’s rant to Cpl. Hilderley was indeed out of line. This was a conversation which should have taken place outside of council chambers. To bring this issue up at a public meeting was rash, impetuous and inappropriate. The mayor should have pounded her gavel and called a halt to Haldane’s tirade. It’s highly unlikely Haldane condones drinking and driving or underage drinking, and it is the RCMP’s duty to enforce the law. Haldane needs to separate his private life from his public one, if he can. He was just being “Herb” but that’s not enough of an excuse, he needs to think a little more before he speaks out in public — like all of the councillors do.

Like Hilderley said, they are targeting behaviour and making a more determined effort en masse to keep the streets of Sooke safer. You can’t really argue with that.

On another note, comments coming out of the mouths of other councillors should also be stopped. In the heat of discussions some of the statements come off sounding bigoted, prejudiced and arrogant.

It is the mayor’s job to protect her councillors from making fools of themselves and in turn making Sooke look foolish. She has the most experience after all.

A year in and they should all know better by now, especially the ones who have sat in the council chambers before.
